Parking meters with an electronic keyboard that require our plate number are unlawful and violate the constitutional right to personal data protection. That was the ruling of Voivodship Administrative Court in Warsaw. When you were paying for parking by typing in your vehicle number and unaware of the consequences walked away, the local authorities and city guards were getting a lot of valuable information about you. The services can combine the plate number with the vehicle owner and for years keep information about where, when and how long you have parked your car. On April 13th Provincial Administrative Court in Warsaw stated that the resolution introducing in Warsaw giving license plate number when parking is unlawful.
The court ruled that collecting such data is not necessary to collect parking fees, and the operation of those parking meters violates the principles of data protection and the constitution. If the judgment will validate, the city will have to end collecting the data.
The Warsaw authorities are likely to appeal against the judgment to the Supreme Administrative Court, however the court decision will only have a local reach and will not affect the situation in your city.
